ESPN Boston - BOSTON -- The smoke is bellowing. But is there fire? Speculation was running rampant Tuesday afternoon that the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs were close to completing a deal that would send Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle to the Bruins.
Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke confirmed during a radio interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub that he was in talks with Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli on a possible deal, but did not mention a specific player or players.
Multiple league sources told ESPNBoston.com that there was no deal in place as of late Tuesday night.
If these reports are true and this move goes down this could mean big things for the Bruins. Kaberle is the Adrien Gonzalez for the Bruins, been sought after for a while, several rumors, and speculation but you weren't going to believe it til you see it. Kaberle is that "puck moving defenseman" that seems to have come up in every discussion of Bruins needs for as long as I can remember. The person who will benefit the most if this move goes down is Zdeno Chara. He takes a lot of heat in this town and I am one of his harsher critics, but with the addition of Kaberle the pressure will be less on Chara to generate offense and he can focus on shutting down the opposing teams best player. Also the power play will improve. The Bruins are in prime position to get Kaberle and he would be happy to come here. Dont screw this up Peter, I will not be satisfied if Chris Kelly is the big deadline deal. Kaberle is the guy now go get him.
